Chapter 18 - Julian's Last Stand

The VIP executive lounge at Terminal 4 was nearly empty at two a.m.

Julian sat in a deep leather armchair, wearing a dark baseball cap pulled low over his eyes and an anonymous black rain jacket. A scuffed leather duffel bag sat pinned securely between his ankles.

Every time the automatic glass doors slid open, his head jerked up, his hand clutching the handle of the duffel bag so tightly his knuckles turned white.

Inside that bag was his salvation: six million dollars in physical bearer certificates, four fake passports, and fifty thousand in crisp hundred-dollar bills. If he could just get wheels-up to Panama, he was beyond the reach of the SEC and the Southern District. From Panama, he could disappear into the interior of Brazil.

"Flight 84-Alpha to Tocumen International," the desk agent announced over the private speaker. "Boarding will commence in five minutes."

Julian let out a ragged, trembling sigh of relief. A manic, desperate grin spread across his stubbled face.

*I made it,* he thought. *She thought she could trap me. She thought she was so brilliant. I’m walking away with six million, and that b***h gets left holding the ashes.*

He grabbed the duffel bag, stood up, and adjusted his cap. He took three brisk steps toward the boarding gate.

"Mr. Vance."

Julian stopped dead in his tracks. The voice came from right behind him.

He didn't run. He couldn't. His legs felt like lead pipes filled with concrete.

He slowly turned around.

Standing ten feet away was Detective Marcus, accompanied by four heavily armed Federal Aviation Marshals in tactical gear.

And standing right beside them, wrapped in a long wool overcoat, was Rosie.

Julian’s eyes darted from the badges to his wife. "Rosie... baby... what are you doing here?"

Rosie looked at him. Her face was completely devoid of makeup. Her eyes were rimmed with red, but her gaze was dead, cold, and razor-sharp.

"I came to see my sixty-thousand-dollar wedding ring one last time, Julian," she said, her voice completely flat. "The one you bought with my father's cancer fund."

Julian took a desperate step toward her, holding his hands out. "Rosie, listen to me! I did this for us! The money in this bag—it’s six million! We can get on that plane right now! Together! We can start over in South America! No Clara. No your mother. Just you and me!"

Rosie didn't move an inch. She didn't blink.

"You told Clara I was a useless trophy," Rosie whispered. "You told her I was an idiot who deserved prison."

Julian’s face twisted in panic. "I lied! I was terrified! Clara was manipulating me! Rosie, please—they're going to put me in a cage for twenty years!"

"Good," Rosie said.

She reached into her coat pocket, pulled out her heavy diamond engagement ring, and dropped it onto the polished airport floor. The platinum band clattered against the tile, rolling until it stopped against Julian’s wet shoe.

"Federal Marshals!" the lead agent barked, lunging forward. "Drop the bag! Hands behind your head! Down on your knees!"

Julian made a frantic lunge toward the emergency tarmac exit, swinging the duffel bag like a weapon.

Two marshals tackled him mid-stride, slamming him violently against the glass partition. The window spider-webbed under the impact. Julian shrieked in agony as his arm was twisted back, the duffel bag ripped from his grip, spilling bundles of hundred-dollar bills and legal bonds across the floor.

"Get off me!" Julian wailed, his face smashed against the bloody glass. "I have rights! I’m an executive! Call Arthur Vance! Call my lawyers!"

"Your lawyers just quit, Vance," Detective Marcus said, snapping heavy steel cuffs onto Julian’s wrists with a resounding click. "You're done."

Rosie turned her back on him, walking away down the long corridor without looking back once as Julian’s pathetic, muffled screams faded behind her.
