Chapter 12 - The Blackmail Blitz

The heavy front door was kicked open by three tactical officers, their weapons drawn, followed immediately by Detective Marcus and two plainclothes federal marshals.

"Police! Hands where we can see them! Down on the ground, Vance! Right now!"

Julian didn't fight. He collapsed onto his knees, trembling like an autumn leaf, pressing his forehead against the floorboards as the zip-ties were yanked around his wrists with brutal efficiency.

"Clara! Clara, wait!" Julian sobbed against the wood. "I didn't mean it! I was out of my mind! Clara, please!"

They hoisted him to his feet, marching him out into the pouring rain. His soaking-wet designer shoes dragged across the threshold, leaving dirty water streaks behind him.

Evelyn leaned against the credenza, clutching her chest, breathing in shallow, ragged gasps. "Officers, this is a family misunderstanding. I am the matriarch of this family—"

"Ma'am, you need to step back," an agent barked, cutting her off without looking at her. "You are currently a person of interest in an active federal wire fraud investigation. Do not leave the state. If you attempt to access any offshore accounts, an arrest warrant will be issued immediately."

The door clicked shut, leaving only me, Rosie, and Evelyn standing in the shattered silence of my foyer.

Rosie was still curled on the floor, her face buried in her knees, crying so hard her whole body convulsed.

Evelyn slowly turned her gaze toward me. The terror had passed; in its place was a venomous, ancient hatred.

"You think you’ve won, don't you?" Evelyn whispered, her voice trembling with malice. "You think you're going to put your sister’s husband in prison, humiliate me, and take Samuel's company for yourself?"

"I don't think it, Evelyn," I said, leaning down to pick up the fallen tire iron and setting it calmly in the corner umbrella stand. "I’ve already done it."

"Not yet," Evelyn said, a twisted, sinister smile spreading across her wrinkled lips. "You forgot about the press, Clara. You forgot who controls the narrative in this town."

She pulled her phone from her Hermes bag.

"I’ve already sent an exclusive dossier to the *New York Post* and *Bloomberg*," Evelyn purred, her eyes glittering. "Headlines will drop at dawn: *'Estranged Tech Heiress Orchestrates Hostile Takeover of Brother-in-Law’s Firm, Demands Extortionate Payout Under Threat of Fabricated Fraud.'* Your private equity partners will drop Valkyrie like a radioactive brick. Your stock price will plummet before the market opens at nine-thirty. You will be toxic. Untouchable."

Rosie slowly raised her head from the floor, staring at her mother in sheer disbelief. "Mom... you're still doing this? Even after what Julian did? Even after what you did to Dad?"

"Shut up, Rosie!" Evelyn hissed, not taking her eyes off me. "I am saving this family! Clara is going to sign the rescission agreement tonight, or she is going to be destroyed on national television tomorrow morning."

I looked at my mother for a long, quiet moment. Then, I smiled.

It wasn't a bitter smile. It was a smile of pure, surgical satisfaction.

"You really shouldn't have sent that press release, Evelyn," I murmured. "Because you just gave me the perfect reason to hold my own press conference."
