Chapter 13 - The Press Conference

By eight-thirty Tuesday morning, the grand ballroom of the Plaza Hotel was packed with over forty journalists, camera crews from CNBC, Bloomberg, and the local affiliates, their lenses pointed like cannons toward a sleek mahogany podium bearing the seal of Valkyrie Holdings.

Evelyn’s leaked smear had hit the tabloids at dawn, just as she promised. *The New York Post* ran the front-page headline: *FAMILY FEUD: TECH HEIRESS ACCUSED OF CORPORATE EXTORTION.*

The room was buzzing with predatory energy. Journalists smelled blood in the water.

In the private green room behind the stage, Sarah Lin straightened my blazer lapels. "The press is ready to tear you apart, Clara. They think this is a messy sibling spat over daddy’s money."

"Let them think that," I said, checking my watch. "Are the federal indictments unsealed?"

"Ten minutes ago," Sarah confirmed, showing me her tablet. "The Southern District issued formal charges against Julian Vance for seven counts of wire fraud, securities manipulation, and grand larceny. And they’ve named Crestview Holdings as a co-conspirator entity."

"Good. Let's go."

I pushed through the double doors and walked onto the stage. The blinding flashbulbs exploded instantly, illuminating the dark room like lightning strikes. Shouts and questions erupted simultaneously from the front row.

"Ms. Hayes! Did you orchestrate a hostile buyout to bankrupt your brother-in-law?"

"Is it true you're using fabricated fraud claims to extort your family?"

I stepped up to the microphone. I didn't raise my hands for quiet. I just stood there, completely still, looking out at the sea of flashing cameras. Gradually, the noise died down, replaced by the heavy hum of television equipment.

"Good morning," I said, my voice steady, clear, and perfectly modulated. "Forty-eight hours ago, my sister publicly declared at a family dinner that I was 'garbage.' That I was weak, unremarkable, and destined to sit at the bottom while her husband built an empire."

A murmur rippled through the reporters.

"Her husband, Julian Vance, was indeed building an empire," I continued, pressing a remote clicker in my hand.

The massive digital projection screen behind me flickered to life.

Instead of corporate balance sheets, the screen displayed high-resolution bank transfer slips, forensic digital routing maps, and the Delaware incorporation certificates bearing Julian’s forged signatures.

"For four years, Julian Vance embezzled forty-two million dollars from Apex Meridian Holdings," I announced, every word ringing out like a death toll. "He diverted client escrow accounts into personal shell entities. And worst of all, he systematically plundered the medical trusts intended for his dying father-in-law."

Gasps echoed through the ballroom. Pens scribbled frantically across notepads.

"And yesterday afternoon," I said, looking straight into the center camera lens, "Julian Vance offered to betray his wife, his mother-in-law, and his firm in exchange for an offshore payout. Hear it for yourselves."

I clicked the remote.

Julian’s frantic, sniveling voice boomed through the ballroom’s surround-sound speakers:

*"Evelyn signed the wire authorizations! Rosie signed the Delaware incorporation documents! I have the paper trail proving they executed the transfers... I’ll testify that Evelyn and Rosie masterminded the probate fraud! You get your revenge. And I walk away with enough capital to start over in South America!"*

The ballroom went completely, utterly silent. You could have heard a pin drop on the velvet carpet.

Then, the storm broke.
