Chapter 6 - The Paper Trail

"You... you pulled the Delaware certificates?" Julian’s voice barely carried over the hum of the lobby HVAC system.
"Every single page," Sarah Lin said crisply. "Along with the IP addresses used to authorize the wire transfers. Every single transfer was authorized from your residential router in the Hamptons. Under Rosie Hayes-Vance's digital signature."
"No," Julian choked out, his eyes darting frantically toward the glass doors as if he were calculating how fast he could sprint to the street. "No, she didn't know anything about that. That was an administrative structure. My tax attorney suggested it—"
"Save it for the Southern District, Julian," I said, descending the final three steps until I stood three feet from him. "You didn't just rob our father while he lay dying in a hospice bed. You set up my sister to take the legal fall if the house of cards ever collapsed. You made her the captain of the ship you were scuttling."
"She’s my wife!" Julian snarled, his mask of corporate dignity cracking into raw, vicious desperation. "She spends eighty thousand dollars a month on clothes, jewelry, and European vacations! She demanded that lifestyle! If she wants the penthouse, she bears the risk!"
"Is that what you tell yourself to sleep at night?"
"Clara, please," he begged, his arrogance collapsing into pathetic groveling. He dropped his briefcase to the marble floor, taking an impulsive step forward. Marcus’s hand shot out, pressing firmly against Julian’s chest, pinning him in place. "I have fifteen million in leveraged options tied up in the third-quarter pipeline. If you freeze my accounts, the clearinghouses will liquidate everything. I will be bankrupt by Friday! I won't even be able to pay the mortgage on the house!"
"You should have thought about that before you called me garbage at a table with thirty people," I said evenly. "Marcus, escort Mr. Vance off the premises. If he steps foot on this property again, have him arrested for criminal trespass."
"You b***h!" Julian screamed, thrashing against Marcus’s iron grip as the second guard grabbed his arm, twisting it behind his back and marching him toward the revolving doors. "You think you've won? You think you can just buy your way into respect? Your family hates you! Your mother despises you! You will always be nothing to them!"
The heavy glass doors spun, cutting off his screams.
Sarah Lin stepped up beside me, tapping her iPad. "Clara, there’s an anomaly."
I turned to her, my heart rate steady. "What kind of anomaly?"
"The Delaware shell didn't just receive the stolen estate funds and the firm's escrow," Sarah murmured, her brow furrowing. "Three days ago, right before you finalized the acquisition of Apex, a wire came into Crestview Holdings from an outside personal account. Seven hundred and fifty thousand dollars."
"From where?"
May you like
"Not from where," Sarah said, looking up at me with real sympathy in her eyes. "From whom. The wire came from Evelyn Hayes. Your mother."
