Chapter 3 - The Broken Pedestal

"You calculated this?" Julian’s voice cracked. His hands were shaking so violently he had to stuff them into his pockets. "You bought my firm's debt just to pull the rug out from under me?"

"You didn't think twice when you pulled the rug out from Dad's medical trust four years ago, did you, Julian?" I took a single step toward him. The corridor lights flickered above us, casting long, sharp shadows over the marble. "You told Mom his care facility was too expensive. You convinced her to liquidate his accounts into your 'guaranteed return' hedge fund. And then you watched him wither away in a state-run ward while you bought Rosie a five-carat rock."

"That was business!" Julian stammered, backing up until his shoulders hit the terrace doors. "The market turned! I lost that capital fair and square!"

"You didn't lose it," I said, pulling my smartphone from my small clutch. I tapped the screen twice and held it out so the harsh blue light lit up his panic-stricken features. "You funneled it through three sub-tier shell entities in Delaware and used it as the initial margin deposit for your partnership buy-in at Apex Meridian. You built your entire golden career on the money meant to keep my father alive."

Rosie lunged forward, snatching at the phone, but I pulled it back effortlessly.

"You're lying!" Rosie screamed, her makeup starting to run from furious, panicked sweat. "Mom signed off on all of that! Mom agreed! Julian is a genius! You're just jealous because you couldn't make anything of yourself!"

"I didn't make anything of myself?" I let out a soft, dry laugh. "Rosie, who do you think funded the logistics startup that Dad invested in twenty years ago? The one Julian told Mom was worthless garbage after Dad had his stroke? You let me have that 'worthless' intellectual property in the probate settlement because you thought it was debt-ridden trash."

Rosie’s breath caught in her throat. She looked at Julian, but Julian’s eyes were wide with pure, unadulterated terror.

"AeroStream Systems," Julian whispered, the color draining from what little life was left in his face. "The autonomous freight protocol. It was acquired by a defense contractor eighteen months ago. The founder... the anonymous majority partner was listed under a trust named *S.H. Holdings*."

"Named after Dad. Samuel Hayes," I said quietly. "A two-hundred-and-ten-million-dollar acquisition, Julian. All cash. All mine."

Rosie slumped against the wainscoting as if she had been punched in the solar plexus. "Two hundred... million?"

Before either of them could speak, Julian’s phone began to vibrate violently against the marble windowsill. The ringtone buzzed like an angry hornet in the silence.

Julian looked down at the caller ID. His eyes bulged.

"It’s... it’s the executive vice chairman," Julian muttered, his voice trembling. "Arthur Vance. Why is Arthur calling me at nine-thirty on a Sunday night?"

"Go ahead," I said, crossing my arms. "Put it on speaker. Let your wife hear what her brilliant husband’s future sounds like."
