Chapter 5 - Monday Morning Massacre

By seven-forty-five Monday morning, the lobby of the Apex Meridian Tower on 5th Avenue was an icy fortress of steel and polished black granite.

Julian hadn't listened to Arthur Vance. Arrogance dies hard.

I stood near the glass mezzanine on the second floor, looking down as Julian stormed through the revolving brass doors. He was wearing his thousand-dollar Brioni overcoat, but his tie was slightly askew, his hair hastily gelled, and dark, purple bruises of exhaustion hung beneath his eyes. He carried a leather briefcase like a shield, marching toward the executive turnstiles with an aggressive stride meant to project power.

He tapped his sleek black keycard against the reader.

A sharp, red buzzer cut through the quiet lobby. *Access Denied.*

Julian frowned, swiping it again, harder. *Access Denied.*

"Excuse me," Julian barked, turning to the security desk where two burly guards in dark blazers stood watch. "There’s an error with the magnetic strip. Re-key this immediately. I have an eight o'clock meeting with the executive committee."

The head of building security, a retired NYPD detective named Marcus, didn't move an inch. He rested his hands on his duty belt. "Mr. Vance, I’m sorry. Your credentials were flagged and revoked at twelve-zero-one this morning by direct order of the controlling board."

"I am a Managing Partner in this building!" Julian’s voice echoed across the marble lobby, causing several incoming junior analysts to stop and stare. "You don't lock me out of my own office! Call Arthur Vance down here right now!"

"Mr. Vance won't be coming down, Julian," I said, my voice carrying clearly over the balcony railing.

Julian froze. He whipped around, his neck snapping back to look up at the mezzanine.

I walked down the sweeping marble staircase slowly, flanked by Sarah Lin, my chief financial auditor, and two federal-grade compliance attorneys in tailored charcoal suits. I wasn't wearing an off-the-rack dress today. I wore a tailored ivory pantsuit, sharp lines, commanding and clean.

"Clara," Julian gasped, taking a step toward the stairs before Marcus stepped smoothly into his path, blocking him with an immovable arm. "Call these dogs off. We can fix this. We can sit down in a private room and negotiate a buyout settlement. You don't need to destroy the whole firm!"

"Destroy the firm?" I stopped on the third step from the bottom, looking down at him. "Julian, the firm is fine. Apex Meridian will survive under new leadership. The only thing being destroyed today... is you."

"You can't prove a damn thing about Delaware!" Julian hissed, dropping his voice as the analysts whispered behind him. "Those transfers were approved by a managing director!"

Sarah Lin adjusted her frameless glasses, pulling an iPad from her leather portfolio. "Actually, Mr. Vance, the forensic sweep completed at five a.m. found the digital routing tokens. You didn't just route the Hayes family estate through Delaware. You routed four million dollars of client escrow funds into an entity called *Crestview Holdings LLC*."

Sarah turned the screen toward him.

"And do you know what we found when we pulled the corporate registry for Crestview, Julian?" I asked, watching the veins pulse violently in his forehead. "It wasn't registered in your name. It was registered under your wife’s social security number. You made Rosie the sole legal officer."

Julian’s face went past pale—it turned completely gray.
