Chapter 17 - The Blood Compact

The safehouse was a windowless, concrete basement beneath an auto repair shop in Queens.

Sophia stood over a steel table covered in blueprint schematics of the Brooklyn Marine Terminal, her face lit by the harsh glare of a single overhead bulb. She had scrubbed the grease from her hands, but her knuckles remained bruised and raw.

"Pier 42," Marcus said, pointing at a high-resolution satellite printout. "It's a private terminal owned by a Panamanian holding company. The vessel is the *Caspian Queen*, an offshore container ship registered under a Liberian flag of convenience. Once that ship clears international waters—twelve miles past the Ambrose Light—U.S. jurisdiction ends. They can hold Vanessa indefinitely, or throw her into the Atlantic."

Sophia stared at the map. "Why did he take Vanessa? If Arthur only needs my genetic sequence to access my father’s patent, Vanessa is completely useless to him."

"Unless Vanessa was holding the other half of the key," a quiet voice echoed from the shadowed staircase.

Sophia and Marcus spun around, Marcus drawing his sidearm in a fluid, practiced motion.

Stepping slowly down the concrete stairs, his hands raised in surrender, was Julian Cross—Daniel Vance’s lead defense attorney. He looked disheveled, his expensive silk tie loosened, his eyes wild with terror.

"Don't shoot," Julian pleaded, his voice shaking. "I'm the only reason Vanessa isn't already dead."

"Give me one reason not to put a bullet through your knee, Cross," Marcus growled, keeping the sight aligned with Julian’s chest. "You spent the last three months trying to get Daniel released on fabricated technicalities."

"Because Daniel is a dead man walking!" Julian spat, stepping under the bulb. "Daniel thinks his father is breaking him out. But Arthur contacted me two days ago through an encrypted courier. Arthur ordered me to file an emergency habeas corpus transfer to move Daniel to a medical facility in Westchester tomorrow morning. Do you know why? Arthur isn't rescuing Daniel. He’s having Daniel liquidated before the trial starts so Daniel can't testify against him under a federal plea deal!"

Sophia stepped forward, her gaze piercing the panicked lawyer. "What did you mean about Vanessa holding the other half of the key?"

Julian swallowed hard, pulling a certified probate envelope from his briefcase and dropping it onto the table. "Dr. Richard Ward knew Arthur was coming for him eight years ago. He knew he couldn't stop them from killing him eventually. So he split the biometric patent key into two components."

Sophia leaned over the document. Her eyes widened as she read the legal language.

"The genetic authorization requires your biological bloodline, Sophia," Julian explained rapidly. "But the financial release escrow requires a corporate co-signatory—specifically, the controlling shareholder of Sterling Logistics. Vanessa didn't just try to warn your father in that diner. Dr. Ward legally designated Vanessa as the sole trustee of the patent's philanthropic charter! That's why Daniel targeted you, and that's why Arthur had to keep Vanessa alive in his company!"

Sophia gripped the edge of the steel table, her knuckles whitening. Vanessa hadn't been an accomplice. She had been the vault keeper. For eight agonizing years, Vanessa had stayed inside the lion's mouth, enduring Arthur and Daniel Vance, acting as the ruthless corporate shark, all to keep Arthur Vance from slaughtering Sophia to gain access to the patent.

"She protected me," Sophia whispered, the realization hitting her like a physical blow. "The whole time... she was the shield."

"And right now," Julian said, checking his watch with trembling fingers, "the shield is being loaded into the hold of the *Caspian Queen*. Arthur has three hours until high tide."

Sophia looked at Marcus. The fear that had lingered in her heart since the day Daniel tried to poison her was gone. In its place burned an icy, unshakeable resolve.

"Marcus," Sophia said, her voice dropping to a dangerous, steady calm. "How many men do you have who don't answer to the NYPD or the Feds?"

May you like

Marcus smiled a grim, lethal smile. "Enough to board a ship."
