Chapter 19 - The Price of Arrogance

"Drop your weapons, all of you!" Marcus bellowed from the upper gangway, his operators flanking the railings with submachine guns trained on Arthur’s guards below.

The mercenaries below didn't raise their rifles; instead, they smiled, stepping aside.

Arthur Vance let out a low, theatrical laugh that echoed through the hollow hold. "Did you really think a retired federal agent and three private security guards could outmaneuver an operation I spent seven years building from the shadows?"

Arthur pressed a button on the remote in his hand.

Instantly, hydraulic locks slammed shut behind Sophia and Marcus. The catwalk access doors sealed with explosive magnetic force. Heavy steel blast shutters dropped over the observation windows, trapping them in the cavernous cargo hold.

Above them, mounted high in the four corners of the hold, automated point-defense security turrets pivoted on motorized gimbals, their red targeting lasers painting bright scarlet dots across Sophia’s chest and Marcus’s forehead.

"You walked into the slaughterhouse, Sophia," Arthur said, his voice cold and devoid of human warmth. "Just like your father."

Vanessa looked up, her swollen eyes widening in horror. "Sophia, no! Why did you come back for me?!"

"Because you kept me alive for eight years," Sophia said, her voice steady as she slowly walked down the metal stairs, stepping directly onto the lower deck, ignoring the targeting laser dancing over her heart.

Arthur watched her approach with genuine fascination. "Remarkable courage. Completely useless, but remarkable. Do you know what this ship is, Sophia? It’s not just a transport. It’s an offshore laboratory. Within two hours, my medical team will extract your complete bone marrow and peripheral blood stem cells. The patent will be unlocked, registered in an unassailable Panamanian trust, and Sterling-Vance Logistics will be dissolved into eighty separate offshore entities."

"And Daniel?" Sophia asked, stopping ten feet from Arthur. "What happens to your son?"

Arthur sneered, his lip curling with disgust. "Daniel’s transport van took a detour across the Tappan Zee Bridge twenty minutes ago. His brakes failed. Just like your dear father's. Daniel was weak. The Vance dynasty has no room for men who let their mistresses and wives dictate their downfall."

Sophia didn't flinch. Instead, a cold, triumphant smile touched her lips.

"Thank you, Arthur," Sophia said softly.

Arthur frowned, his eyes narrowing. "For what?"

Sophia reached up to her ear and pulled out a tiny, high-gain military-grade transmitter—not linked to Marcus Bennett, but broadcasting across an open, encrypted satellite uplink.

"For the confession," Sophia said.

Suddenly, the ship's massive primary generators shut down. The cavernous hold was plunged into pitch-black darkness.
