Chapter 25 - The Poisoned Sanctuary

The clock in the Manhattan field office read 04:30 AM.

Fifty-one hours remained.

Sophia sat in the secure conference room, her skin pale, but her eyes burning with an unyielding, predatory focus. On the glass whiteboard behind her, Miller’s analysts had mapped out the entire corporate architecture of Blackwood Holdings and its shell subsidiaries.

"Arthur’s legal team is already preparing an emergency bail petition," Miller said, dropping a thick manila folder on the steel table. "The moment Arthur heard rumors that Sophia might recant, his high-priced attorneys smelled blood. Judge Morrison is notoriously corrupt; he’s been on the Vance payroll for a decade. If Sophia signs this affidavit, Morrison will grant Arthur temporary release under house arrest within an hour."

Vanessa leaned over the table, her knuckles white. "If Arthur walks, Victoria intercepts him. If she gets those bearer shares, she disappears into non-extradition waters with five billion dollars in untraceable maritime equity, and Sophia dies."

"She won't get the shares," Sophia said quietly.

Miller looked at her sharply. "What are you planning, Vance?"

"Daniel didn't know Victoria’s real identity, but he was paranoid to the point of obsession," Sophia explained, standing up and walking to the window overlooking the pre-dawn Manhattan skyline. "Daniel kept an offline backup server hidden inside our marital penthouse. He thought it was his insurance against Arthur. But Daniel didn't hide it in his study or his safe."

Vanessa frowned. "Where did he hide it?"

"In the nursery," Sophia said, her voice dropping into a register of profound, lingering grief. "The room we renovated four years ago, before my three miscarriages. The room he never stepped foot in again. Daniel knew I couldn't bear to open that door. That’s why he put it there."

Thirty minutes later, an unmarked tactical van pulled up to the luxury high-rise on Park Avenue.

The penthouse had already been sealed with yellow police tape following Daniel’s arrest, but the silence inside was suffocating. Sophia walked past the shattered remnants of her marriage—the modern art, the Italian leather furniture, the lingering scent of Daniel’s expensive sandalwood cologne.

She stopped before the white door at the end of the long hall. Her hand trembled on the brass handle.

Vanessa placed a gentle hand on her shoulder. "You don't have to do this alone."

"I have to face the ghost before I can kill it," Sophia replied.

She pushed the door open.

The nursery was frozen in time: soft cream-colored wallpaper with subtle gold stars, an empty white crib, and unopened boxes of baby clothes. It was a monument to the family Daniel had systematically poisoned before it could even begin.

Sophia walked straight to the handcrafted cherrywood rocking chair beside the window. She knelt, running her fingers beneath the base of the left runner. A micro-latch clicked. A false panel dropped open, revealing an encrypted solid-state drive and an old leather-bound journal.

Suddenly, the floor-to-ceiling glass of the living room behind them shattered in an explosion of sound.

"Down!" Vanessa screamed, tackling Sophia to the carpet as a volley of suppressed gunfire chewed through the drywall above their heads.
