Chapter 47 - The Wolf at the Door

Thirty floors above the wet streets of Midtown Manhattan, Eleanor Sterling stood before the floor-to-ceiling glass of her penthouse suite in the Baccarat Hotel, swirling a glass of vintage Pinot Noir with erratic, violent twitches of her wrist.

Across the room, sitting languidly on a white velvet chaise lounge, Daniel was polishing the screen of an encrypted tablet with a silk handkerchief.

"You said she was contained, Daniel," Eleanor hissed, her voice shaking with barely controlled paranoia. "You swore to me that the extraction from the Hudson estate was a clean sweep! Now Miller and that little bitch just wiped out a four-man tactical team in Brooklyn!"

Daniel didn't look up from his screen. "Marcus Miller is an FBI tactical instructor, Eleanor. It was always a possibility he’d buy her twenty minutes of breathing room. It changes nothing."

"It changes *everything*!" Eleanor snapped, slamming her wine glass onto a black marble console table so hard the stem snapped, spilling dark red wine across Julian’s original signed contracts. "The board of directors is meeting at nine tomorrow morning to ratify the asset reallocation! If Sophia surfaces at the SEC or drops Julian’s encrypted files to the Southern District, the FBI will freeze every Sterling account across the Atlantic before the markets open!"

Daniel raised his cold, dead eyes. He looked at Eleanor the way an exterminator looks at a roach that doesn't realize it has already stepped into the poison.

"Eleanor," Daniel said softly, standing up and smoothing the lapels of his custom Tom Ford suit. "Do you know why Julian kept you around for twenty years despite your incompetence?"

Eleanor took a step back, her eyes narrowing. "Watch your mouth, Daniel. I am Julian's sister. I built the shipping manifests that made this entire network function."

"Julian kept you because you were loud, stupid, and predictably greedy," Daniel said, closing the distance between them with slow, terrifying grace. "Whenever the federal regulators got too close, Julian leaked one of your little smuggling boats to the Coast Guard. You were his human shield. And now... you are mine."

Eleanor reached for the pearl-handled revolver in her designer handbag on the table.

Daniel was faster. In a blur of movement, his gloved hand clamped around Eleanor's wrist, twisting it inward until the bone audibly groaned. With his other hand, he seized her throat, slamming her back against the glass window that overlooked the glowing grid of Manhattan.

"Listen to me very carefully, Aunt Eleanor," Daniel whispered, his breath hot against her ear. "Caroline and I don't need three people at the top of the table. Tomorrow morning, you will attend the board meeting. You will sign the proxy voting rights over to Caroline's holding company. And then, you will take a very long, very permanent vacation to our compound in Dubai."

"You... bastard..." Eleanor choked out, her face turning purple.

"If you refuse," Daniel smiled, pressing his thumb into the nerve cluster beneath her jaw, "I will personally hand the raw, unedited footage of you orchestrating Julian’s cardiac cocktail to the District Attorney. You will rot in a federal cage until you die of old age."

He released her abruptly. Eleanor fell to the plush carpet, gasping for air, her chest heaving as she clutched her bruised throat.

Daniel adjusted his cuffs, walked to the suite's private elevator, and pressed the call button.

"Sleep well, Eleanor," he said without looking back. "Tomorrow, the Sterling name finally belongs to people who know how to use it."

As the elevator doors slid shut, the burner phone concealed inside Eleanor's boot vibrated twice.

With shaking, bruised fingers, Eleanor dragged the phone from her boot.

There was a single incoming text message from an unlisted number:

*He's going to kill you the moment the ink is dry, Eleanor. Look at your offshore balance in Bern. It’s already zero. If you want to survive tomorrow, call me.*

May you like

The text was signed: *Sophia.*
