Chapter 45 - A Mother’s Poison

Miller threw himself against the brick wall beneath the rusted window slit, drawing his weapon and peering out into the rain-slicked industrial alley.

Two black Suburbans with tinted windows sat idling at both ends of the alleyway, their headlights completely extinguished. On the rooftop across the street, the faint glimmer of optical lenses caught the streetlamps.

"How did you find this IP?" Miller snarled into the laptop microphone.

"Marcus, please," Daniel chuckled softly. "You bought that VPN proxy through a shell company registered in Delaware that Caroline set up for the Marshals Service six years ago. You’ve been swimming in our aquarium since the day you were assigned to Julian's protective detail."

Sophia leaned over the desk, her face inches from the web camera. "Where is Eleanor?"

"Eleanor is having lunch with our brokers," Daniel answered smoothly. "She thinks we're partners. She thinks she's taking the European shipping lanes while Caroline and I manage the Wall Street front. Poor, arrogant Eleanor. She always lacked vision."

A second voice joined the call—softer, aristocratic, dripping with venomous maternal condescension.

"Sophia, darling."

Sophia froze. "Caroline."

"Don't be dramatic, Sophia. You've had a very comfortable life. Julian gave you everything. Daniel gave you five years of impeccable companionship. All we ask is that you come down the stairs, walk to the black SUV, and provide the retinal scan. Once the offshore vaults are transferred to the Sterling Trust, you will be escorted to a private villa in Costa Rica. You will live comfortably for the rest of your life."

"And if I refuse?" Sophia’s voice trembled with rage. "You shoot me? You shoot me here in an alley like a stray dog?"

"If you refuse, my dear," Caroline sighed softly, "we leak the security footage from Julian's penthouse suite on the night of his poisoning. The footage our private technicians meticulously edited twenty-four hours ago. It shows you pouring the digitalis into his Scotch. The NYPD has already issued a murder-one warrant in your name. You walk out into the light, or Marcus dies, and you spend the rest of your life in Bedford Hills."

Sophia looked at Miller. The federal agent's face was pale, his eyes locked on the snipers across the street.

"They're not going to Costa Rica, Sophia," Miller whispered, his voice steady despite the impending slaughter. "The moment that transfer clears, they double-tap us both and bury the car in concrete."

Sophia stared at the screen, watching the audio waveform pulse with her mother’s breath.

"Caroline?" Sophia spoke softly into the microphone.

"Yes, darling?"

"You forgot one detail about Father's safe in the library."

A momentary pause chilled the line. "What detail?"

"He didn't just store the master cipher in my retinal pattern," Sophia whispered, her hand moving under the table toward the warehouse's main electrical breaker box. "He stored the fail-safe trigger. Marcus—NOW!"
