Chapter 38 - The Ghost in the Foundation

Three hours later, the sun had fully risen, pouring cold, unforgiving light across the Sterling corporate headquarters.
Federal agents were wheeling out server towers, filing cabinets, and artwork under the glaring flashes of hundreds of press cameras gathered on the street below. Every financial news network in the Western Hemisphere was broadcasting the same headline: *THE FALL OF THE STERLING DYNASTY: ELEANOR STERLING INDICTED ON CHARGES OF MURDER, EMBEZZLEMENT, AND TERRORISM.*
Inside Julian's old personal office on the 42nd floor, Sophia sat in her father’s leather armchair, sipping black coffee. Her arm was freshly bandaged by a federal paramedic. Across the desk sat Marcus Miller, his tie removed, rubbing his bloodshot eyes.
"Maya has been recovered," Miller reported, setting down his radio. "Greek authorities intercepted the transport vessel two miles off Piraeus. She’s safe, Sophia. She’s currently at the American Embassy in Athens. Vanessa is on a private transport to meet her right now."
Sophia closed her eyes, releasing a breath she felt she had been holding for months. "Thank you, Marcus."
"Don't thank me yet," Miller said, leaning forward, his tone shifting into grave seriousness. "We went through Eleanor’s personal safe at her Hamptons estate an hour ago. We found the digital records she kept on Daniel’s finances."
Sophia opened her eyes. "Did he leave something else behind?"
"Not Daniel," Miller said, sliding a manila envelope across the desk. "Daniel was a pawn, just like you said. But Eleanor wasn't working alone. The financing for the Pier 47 sabotage didn't come from the Obsidian fund. That fund was frozen before the detonators fired."
Sophia frowned, picking up the envelope. "Then where did the capital come from?"
"A private domestic account," Miller said quietly. "Registered under a shell corporation called *Icarus Holdings*. The signature on the authorization wire was signed seventy-two hours ago. Twelve hours *after* Daniel died in that penthouse."
Sophia’s fingers tightened on the paper. "That’s impossible. Daniel is in the city morgue. Victoria is in federal custody. Arthur is in supermax. Who has access to Daniel’s domestic accounts?"
"That’s the terrifying part," Miller said, looking directly into Sophia’s eyes. "The biometric signature attached to the wire didn't belong to Daniel. And it didn't belong to Eleanor."
Sophia ripped open the envelope.
Inside was a high-resolution photocopy of an authorization slip from the Manhattan Private Bank, dated three days prior. At the bottom was a digital fingerprint scan and a signature written in an elegant, familiar slant.
The name signed at the bottom was *Caroline Vance*.
Sophia’s breath caught in her throat. Her blood turned to ice. "Caroline... my mother?"
May you like
"Julian’s wife," Miller said grimly. "The woman who allegedly died of cancer in a private Swiss clinic when you were seven years old."
