Chapter 37 - The Vault of Judas

Eleanor’s eyes widened in sudden, visceral horror. "You did what?"
"You said Julian’s password was weak," Sophia said, taking the tablet from Vanessa’s shaking hands without breaking eye contact with Eleanor. "You assumed Julian used my birthday. But Julian knew you better than anyone. He knew you would try to guess it. So he didn't use my birth date."
Sophia tapped the final sequence into the tablet’s terminal.
"He used the date he caught you forging his father's will," Sophia continued, her fingers flying across the glass screen. "September 14, 1978. The Obsidian fund has been transferred directly into the escrow account of the Federal Financial Crimes Task Force. All twelve billion dollars of it."
On Eleanor’s personal smartphone, which lay beside her teacup, a frantic cascade of red alert notifications began to scream. Bank alerts, sovereign fund rejections, frozen asset warnings—a digital avalanche wiping out seventy years of stolen wealth in seventy seconds.
"You insolent little bitch!" Eleanor shrieked, lunging across the table, her porcelain mask completely shattering into an ugly, contorted snarl of pure greed and hatred. "That is Sterling blood! That is my life's work!"
Miller slammed Eleanor’s wrists behind her back, forcing her down against the polished mahogany with a sharp click of steel cuffs. "Eleanor Sterling, you have the right to remain silent!"
"Get off me, you peasant!" Eleanor screamed, thrashing against Miller’s grip, her immaculate chignon coming undone, white hair whipping wildly across her face. "Sophia! You will rot in hell for this! You will die with nothing! *Nothing!*"
Sophia didn't look at her grandmother as the agents hauled the thrashing matriarch toward the door. She looked down at the tablet screen, where the asset freeze confirmation was blinking green.
Beside her, Vanessa collapsed to her knees, sobbing uncontrollably onto the thick carpet. "Sophia... I'm sorry... I'm so sorry... I should have told you... I should have let her kill me..."
Sophia knelt down beside Vanessa. Her own body was screaming in exhaustion, the neurotoxin’s lingering traces making her vision swim with grey spots. But she placed both hands firmly on Vanessa’s shoulders, forcing her friend to look up.
"Did you know Victoria was going to poison the champagne?" Sophia asked, her voice cracking slightly.
"No! On my mother's soul, Sophia, no!" Vanessa wept, clutching Sophia’s wrists. "Eleanor told me it was just an extortion play! She told me if Daniel was disgraced, you would take the CEO seat, and then I could resign and Maya would be freed! I tried to warn you about Daniel’s offshore accounts... that’s why I left the audit logs on your desk!"
Sophia stared into Vanessa’s eyes for three long seconds. She saw the truth there. In Eleanor’s empire, everyone had been made into a monster or a victim. Sophia refused to let Eleanor claim one more soul.
"Miller," Sophia called out, standing up.
Miller paused at the door, holding the cursing, struggling Eleanor by the arm. "Yeah?"
"Tell the Southern District that Vanessa Cross is operating under full federal immunity as an undercover asset for the Sterling Trust," Sophia said clearly. "And deploy the federal maritime task force in the Mediterranean. Maya Cross is coming home today."
Vanessa let out a ragged, gasping sob and pressed her forehead against Sophia’s knees.
Eleanor stopped screaming. She looked back over her shoulder, her cold blue eyes locking onto Sophia’s with a terrifying, unholy stillness.
"You think this is over, Sophia?" Eleanor whispered, her voice chilling the room back into silence. "You think locking an old woman in a cage stops the machine? Daniel wasn't the only one who left behind a ghost."
May you like
The doors closed behind Eleanor, leaving the boardroom in ringing silence.
