Chapter 22 - The Ghost of Blackwood Manor

The ocean wind whipping off the Boston harbor felt like razor blades against Sophia Vance’s skin. The flashing red-and-blue emergency beacons painted the wet asphalt in streaks of violent crimson.

Her phone screen glowed like an open wound:

*Arthur was a fool. Daniel was a child. Thank you for clearing the board for me, little sister. 71:59:59... and counting.*

Sophia’s breath hitched. A deep, hollow chill seized her sternum, followed immediately by a sharp, rhythmic flutter in her chest.

"Sophia, don’t look at it," Vanessa commanded, lunging forward to snatch the phone from the cold metal bumper of the ambulance. Vanessa’s hands, usually steady as surgical steel, trembled. "Dr. Hayes, what the hell are we looking at? Talk to me in English, not lab jargon!"

Dr. Hayes grabbed Sophia’s wrist, pressing two fingers against her radial artery. His face was ghostly pale beneath the halogen floodlights. "Her resting pulse just jumped to one hundred and twenty. Mrs. Vance, you must breathe. In through your nose, slowly. Count to four. Out through your mouth. If your adrenaline spikes past threshold levels, the compound accelerates its cleavage cycle."

"Who sent this?" Special Agent Miller’s voice cut through the chaos like a whip. He leaned over the ambulance bumper, his tactical vest creaking as he signaled his cyber-forensics unit with a sharp snap of his fingers. "Miller to Comms. Trace the routing header on that SMS immediately. Ping every cell tower between here and the Maine coastline."

Sophia looked past them, staring into the black expanse of the Atlantic. Her mind raced backward through decades of carefully curated family lies. *Little sister.*

The words weren't a metaphor. They weren't a taunt from an anonymous rival. Only one person in the Sterling-Vance lineage possessed the right to utter that phrase—a ghost her father had supposedly buried twenty-two years ago.

"Victoria," Sophia whispered, the name slipping past her numbed lips like venom.

Vanessa froze. Her brown eyes widened in horror. "Victoria? Victoria is dead, Sophia. Your father held a closed-casket memorial for her when you were ten. She died in that sanitarium fire in Zurich."

"There was no fire," Sophia murmured, her hand rising involuntarily to clutch her collarbone. Underneath the delicate lace of her blouse, her heart rattled against her ribs like a trapped bird. "I found an unredacted ledger in Arthur’s private study three weeks before Daniel staged the gala. My father didn’t bury his firstborn daughter. He paid ten million dollars to a private Swiss clinic to erase her identity. He disinherited her because she tried to poison my mother’s IV line while I was still in the womb."

"My God," Dr. Hayes muttered, staring at the telemetry monitor strapped to Sophia's arm. The digital waveform spiked into jagged, erratic peaks. "An engineered organophosphate. A dormancy window timed specifically to an external trigger. This isn't black-market street poison, Agent Miller. This is pharmaceutical-grade bio-engineering. It costs tens of millions to synthesize."

"Victoria didn't just survive," Sophia said, her voice dropping to a dangerous, icy pitch as fury fought through the rising terror in her veins. "She watched Daniel crawl through his petty affairs. She watched Arthur build his illegal shipping empire. She fed Daniel the thallium, knowing I would survive it, knowing I would tear Arthur down. She used me as her wrecking ball."

Miller’s tablet chimed. A technical analyst from the FBI field office sprinted across the pier, his boots splashing in salt water. "Agent Miller! The satellite bounce originated from a private server farm in Rhode Island—registered to an entity called Blackwood Holdings."

Sophia felt a sickening wave of nausea crash over her. "Blackwood Manor. My mother’s ancestral estate. It’s been locked under probate for fifteen years."

"Then that’s where our clock begins," Vanessa said, checking the slide on her service weapon with ruthless efficiency. "We have seventy-one hours to find the biological synthesis formula and put Victoria in the ground."
