Chapter 1 - THE WOMAN CARRYING THE TRAY“Take that coffee to my table.”

The command cut through the crowded Fort Liberty cafeteria with enough authority to make two nearby soldiers instinctively glance over.

Colonel Sophia Carter stopped beside the stainless-steel counter.

A metal tray rested in her hands.

Her dark field jacket was zipped high enough to conceal the silver eagle on her uniform, while a temporary visitor badge clipped near her pocket made her look like someone who belonged everywhere and nowhere.

That was intentional.

Across from her stood Lieutenant Colonel Vanessa Cole.

Vanessa was immaculate.

Pressed uniform.

Polished boots.

Perfect posture.

The expression of a woman accustomed to being obeyed before she finished speaking.

She pointed toward a table where three officers waited.

“Coffee,” Vanessa repeated.

Sophia looked at her.

“I don’t work here.”

Vanessa’s eyes traveled slowly over the tray.

“You’re carrying one.”

Behind Sophia, cafeteria employee Linda Mercer pressed a trembling hand against her injured wrist.

Sophia had taken the tray from Linda only minutes earlier after noticing the older woman struggling.

“I’m helping someone who got hurt,” Sophia said.

Vanessa glanced at Linda.

There was no concern in her eyes.

“Then help one more time.”

Sophia remained still.

Around them, lunch continued.

Forks scraped plates.

Boots crossed tile.

Young soldiers laughed beside the beverage station.

None of them understood that a command evaluation had already begun.

Officially, it started tomorrow.

Unofficially, Sophia had begun the moment she arrived.

She had spent twenty-two years learning that leaders revealed the most about themselves when they believed nobody important was watching.

Vanessa reached for a fresh cup of coffee.

For one second, Sophia assumed she was finally leaving.

Instead, Vanessa tilted it.

Dark coffee poured across the pale tile directly in front of Sophia’s boots.

Conversation died around them.

Vanessa dropped the empty cup.

“Clean it.”

Sophia stared at the spreading stain.

Then she raised her eyes.

“Do you always treat civilian employees this way?”

Vanessa smiled.

“People beneath us should understand their place.”

Sophia’s expression changed.

Only slightly.

But Major Eric Dalton noticed.

He had been sitting at Vanessa’s table.

Now he stopped reaching for his fork.

Something about the woman holding that tray suddenly bothered him.

Sophia placed it carefully on the counter.

Metal struck steel.

Clang.

“Pick up your cup,” Sophia said.

Vanessa stared at her.

“What?”

“You dropped it.”

Nobody moved.

Vanessa stepped closer.

“You have absolutely no idea who you’re speaking to.”

Sophia looked directly into her eyes.

“That makes two of us.”

And somewhere in Major Dalton’s memory, a name began surfacing.

Carter.

Colonel Carter.

A classified command assessment.
