Chapter 13 - LINDA’S HUSBAND KNEW TOO MUCHLinda’s husband, Thomas Mercer, had spent nineteen years working construction on military installations.
Years earlier, his company had subcontracted renovations connected to one of Voss’s shell corporations.
Thomas remembered unusual invoices.
Materials that never arrived.
Buildings billed twice.
Supervisors ordered not to ask questions.
Then an accident injured his back.
His company settled quickly.
Too quickly.
Linda brought Sophia an old cardboard box from their garage.
Inside were invoices Thomas had kept.
Sophia compared them against the contracts.
The numbers matched.
One invoice carried a handwritten approval code.
Sophia recognized it.
