Linda was wiping the counter.
No soldiers watched.
No colonels stood nearby.
No cameras recorded the moment.
Vanessa picked up a cleaning cloth.
Linda raised an eyebrow.
“What are you doing?”
“Helping.”
“You don’t work here.”
Vanessa almost laughed.
“I’ve heard that before.”
Linda smiled despite herself.
They cleaned quietly.
Then Vanessa apologized again.
Not because Sophia was watching.
Not because her career depended on it.
Because she finally understood.
Linda accepted.
She did not forget.
Neither woman expected her to.
