Chapter 10 - THE WOMAN VANESSA BECAMEVanessa finally told Sophia everything.

Voss had mentored her for eight years.

He praised aggression.

Rewarded obedience.

Punished hesitation.

He taught young officers that compassion weakened command.

Vanessa had absorbed every lesson.

She became efficient.

Promotable.

Feared.

And slowly unbearable.

“I thought I was becoming him because he was successful,” she admitted.

Sophia looked at her.

“You became him because nobody stopped you.”

Vanessa nodded.

Then she handed Sophia a flash drive.

“What’s this?”

“Insurance.”

“Against Voss?”

“Against everyone.”

Sophia inserted it into an isolated laptop.

Hundreds of files appeared.

Emails.

Invoices.

Audio recordings.

Personnel actions.

Sophia stared at Vanessa.

“How long have you had this?”

“Three years.”

“Why didn’t you come forward?”

Vanessa looked ashamed.

“Because courage is easy to demand from people beneath you.”

Her voice dropped.

“It was harder when I needed it myself.”
