Chapter 4 - THE FILE THEY NEVER EXPECTEDAt 6:40 the next morning, Sophia entered Fort Liberty headquarters.

A red folder waited on her desk.
It had not been there the night before.
No sender.
No note.
Only one handwritten sentence across the cover.
YOU NEED TO SEE WHAT THEY BURIED.
Sophia closed the office door.
Inside were twelve complaint summaries.
Civilian employees.
Junior officers.
Enlisted soldiers.
Different dates.
Different departments.
The same pattern.
Public humiliation.
Threats disguised as corrections.
Retaliatory assignments.
Performance reviews altered after disagreements.
Sophia read every page.
Then she reached the last document.
It stopped her.
The complaint had been filed eleven months earlier by Captain Rachel Moore.
Moore was one of the officers sitting with Vanessa yesterday.
According to the document, Moore had accused an unnamed senior officer of manipulating a readiness report after equipment failures.
The complaint had been withdrawn forty-eight hours later.
Sophia checked the signature.
Rachel Moore.
At seven sharp, the evaluation began.
Vanessa sat across the conference table.
Moore sat three chairs away.
Sophia watched her.
The captain looked composed.
Too composed.
Sophia opened with routine readiness questions.
Training.
Maintenance.
Retention.
Everything appeared normal.
Then she placed the anonymous folder on the table.
Nobody spoke.
Vanessa’s eyes flickered toward it.
Moore went pale.
Sophia noticed both.
“We’ll be reviewing command climate complaints this afternoon.”
Vanessa nodded.
“Of course.”
Sophia watched her carefully.
Moore did not look up.
At 10:17, Sophia returned to her office.
The red folder was gone.
She stopped inside the doorway.
Her desk was untouched.
Her laptop remained locked.
Her evaluation binders were exactly where she had left them.
Only the anonymous folder had disappeared.
Someone had entered a colonel’s secured office during an active command evaluation.
Sophia immediately called James.
He arrived four minutes later.
“You’re certain?”
“I know where I leave evidence.”
James’s expression darkened.
“Security cameras?”
“We check them quietly.”
“Why quietly?”
Sophia looked through the glass wall toward headquarters.
Officers moved through the corridor.
Some greeted her.
Some looked away.
“Because whoever took that folder thinks yesterday was the threat.”
James followed her gaze.
Sophia’s voice lowered.
“It wasn’t.”
“What is?”
May you like
She looked at the empty place on her desk.
“Whatever they’re trying to keep me from reading.”
