Chapter 9 - JAMES REED’S CONFESSIONJames did not run when confronted.

He closed Sophia’s office door and sat down.
“I signed them.”
Sophia’s voice hardened.
“Why?”
“Because Voss told me they were emergency authorizations from higher command.”
“You didn’t verify?”
“I did.”
James looked ashamed.
“Afterward.”
Sophia waited.
“The companies were shells.”
“Then why didn’t you report it?”
James looked toward the window.
“Because my daughter was diagnosed with leukemia three weeks later.”
Sophia’s anger paused.
James continued.
“My life became hospitals, treatments, insurance calls, and trying to keep this command functioning.”
His voice cracked.
“I told myself I would fix it later.”
Sophia understood.
She did not excuse it.
“And later?”
James looked at her.
“Voss got promoted.”
Silence filled the office.
