Chapter 4 - WHAT MARIANNE NEVER TOLD HIMThat night, Graham found his mother sitting alone beside the fireplace.

The firelight made her look older.

Not weak.

Just tired.

"You deserve the truth," she finally said.

Graham sat opposite her.

"Then tell me."

Marianne began with Daniel Voss.

His father had once worked for August Bellamy's hospitality empire.

Daniel was intelligent.

Ambitious.

And poor.

He believed Bellamy would eventually help him rise.

Instead, Daniel discovered irregular financial transactions hidden inside the company's private accounts.

Money was moving through shell corporations.

Properties were being transferred.

People were being paid to remain silent.

Daniel tried to expose it.

Then everything changed.

He lost his job.

His friends disappeared.

And one night, he came home terrified.

Marianne had been pregnant.

With Graham.

"Your father told me if anything happened to him, I should take you and disappear."

"What happened?"

"He died six months later."

Graham's jaw tightened.

"You told me he was sick."

"I lied."

The room seemed to shrink.

"Why?"

"Because I wanted you to grow up believing the world was ordinary."

Marianne reached for his hand.

"I didn't want you looking over your shoulder every time you became successful."

Graham pulled his hand away.

"You let me build my entire life on a lie."

"I let you build your life without fear."

He stood.

"Maybe you should have trusted me with the truth."

Marianne looked at him.

"I was afraid the truth would come looking for you."

May you like

Neither of them noticed the shadow outside the window.

Someone had been listening.
