Behind it was a narrow staircase.
Graham descended alone.
The air smelled of dust, stone and old paper.
At the bottom was a hidden archive.
Boxes filled the room.
Bank statements.
Photographs.
Letters.
Contracts.
And a leather notebook with his father's name on the cover.
Graham opened it.
The first pages were ordinary.
Then came the names.
Bellamy.
Harrow.
Banks.
Judges.
Politicians.
And one name that made Graham stop breathing.
Conrad Harrow.
His father's handwriting filled the page beneath it.
Conrad knows where the money went.
Graham turned the page.
Another sentence.
If I disappear, Marianne must never trust the Harrows.
The room seemed to tilt.
Conrad wasn't merely an investor.
He had known Daniel.
Maybe he had known Marianne.
Maybe he had known Graham before Graham even knew himself.
Then Graham found the final page.
Only one sentence had been written.
The money used to build Graham's future came from the man who destroyed his father's past.
