Chapter 13 - The Secret in the Vault of St. Jude

Daniel stood under the flickering fluorescent light of an all-night diner in Fort Bragg, thirty miles south of the cottage. Noah was in the back booth, sleeping with his head on Rosa’s lap, guarded by two armed private security contractors Daniel had hired via emergency retainer at 4:00 AM.

Detective Miller’s face appeared on Daniel’s laptop screen over an encrypted satellite connection. The veteran detective looked ten years older than he had twenty-four hours ago, his eyes rimmed with red veins, a half-burned cigarette dangling between yellowed fingers.

"The paper you scanned is real, Daniel," Miller said, his voice flat. "I just ran the court registry stamp through the New York State archive. It's legitimate. Noah was never Claire’s biological child."

The diner around Daniel seemed to fade into a blur of gray shadows and muffled neon. "Claire went through eighteen months of IVF," Daniel whispered, his voice shaking with fury and confusion. "I was at the clinic. I held her hand during the transfers. I took her to the ultrasounds!"

"Did you?" Miller leaned forward, tapping his screen. "Look at the records I just pulled from Dr. Julian Vance’s private clinic in Manhattan. You went to the first two appointments, Daniel. Then your firm had that hostile takeover in Frankfurt. You were in Germany for six months between March and September 2020."

Daniel gripped the edge of the laminate table until the plastic trim bit into his palms. "Claire sent me the ultrasound scans every week. We did video calls every night!"

"The ultrasound scans were Evelyn’s," Miller said ruthlessly. "Julian Vance wasn't just your fertility doctor. He was Evelyn’s half-brother. They set up the entire architecture of your marriage three years before Claire even got sick."

"Why?" Daniel yelled, drawing sharp glances from the truck drivers at the counter. He lowered his voice, trembling with suppressed rage. "Why would Claire agree to that? Claire loved me! She would never fake a pregnancy!"

"Claire didn't fake it willingly," Miller said grimly. "Julian Vance didn't just run a fertility clinic. He ran an off-the-books clinical trial for experimental immunosuppressants funded by Montgomery Biotech. Claire was diagnosed with early-stage ovarian cancer during her first routine screening in 2019. Vance hid the diagnosis from you both. He told Claire she was carrying a high-risk pregnancy, pumped her full of 'vitamins' that were actually heavy metal cocktails, and kept her isolated in that private clinic in the Berkshires while you were in Europe."

Miller took a drag from his cigarette, exhaling gray smoke into his webcam. "When Claire finally realized she wasn't pregnant—that Evelyn was carrying the child fathered by your frozen sample—Claire tried to run. That's when Vance and Evelyn moved to stage two. They introduced Evelyn to you at the charity gala three months after Claire's 'miscarriage' and subsequent death."

Daniel felt the floor drop out beneath him. Every romantic memory, every kiss under the chandeliers of Whispering Pines, every soft word Evelyn had whispered in his ear as she helped him mourn his first wife—it was all an orchestrated, industrial slaughterhouse operation.

"Noah isn't just your son, Daniel," Miller said, dropping the real bomb. "Under the Montgomery family trust, any child born of an Evelyn Montgomery direct lineage inherits the controlling voting shares of Montgomery Biotech upon reaching their fourth birthday—*if* the child is in the custody of a Montgomery blood relative."

Daniel's breath caught in his throat. "Noah turns four on Friday."

"In seventy-two hours," Miller confirmed. "And if you are dead, legal custody reverts instantly to Evelyn's next of kin: Dr. Julian Vance."
