Chapter 20 - The Knock Beneath the Steel

The storm raged on, but the roof deck was suddenly still, save for the crackle of the spent flare casing sizzling in a puddle of rainwater.

Noah was crying now, coughing against Daniel’s chest, clinging to his father's soaked shirt with tiny, bruised fingers. "Daddy... Daddy, it's cold..."

"I have you, baby. I have you. Daddy’s got you," Daniel sobbed, burying his face in Noah’s neck, the tears mixing with the freezing rain. He held his son so tightly he could feel the frantic, beautiful beating of the child's heart against his own ribs.

It was 12:02 PM.

The deadline had passed. Evelyn was dead in the sea. The trust was broken. It was over.

A heavy mechanical thud echoed from the center of the concrete deck.

Daniel’s head snapped up.

The rusted iron hatch leading down into the submerged naval bunker—the door Evelyn had claimed Claire was behind—was vibrating.

*Thump.*

Daniel pulled Noah to his feet, stepping backward toward the exit stairs. "Miller?" he shouted. "SWAT?"

No answer. Only the roar of the wind.

*THUMP. THUMP.*

The sound was coming from the inside. Metal against metal. Slow, rhythmic, deliberate.

Daniel picked up his Glock from the puddles. He racked the slide. Three rounds left.

He approached the hatch with slow, agonizing steps, keeping Noah shielded behind his back. The heavy iron wheel on the exterior of the hatch was locked with a rusted padlock.

Beside the padlock, scratched into the wet orange rust of the iron plate, were fresh, jagged letters carved within the last hour:

*LOOK AT HIS WRIST, DANIEL.*

Daniel stopped. His breath caught in his throat.

Slowly, trembling, he reached down and pulled back the cuff of Noah’s rain-soaked sleeve.

There, just beneath the boy's scarred forearm where the medical needles had been placed months ago, was a tiny, faint birthmark. A cluster of three pale dots in the shape of a triangle.

Claire’s birthmark. The genetic anomaly Claire had carried on her own left wrist since childhood.

Noah was not Evelyn’s biological son. Evelyn had lied. The adoption papers were a forgery. Noah was Claire’s true-born child.

Which meant—

*CLANG.*

The heavy padlock on the bunker hatch snapped from the inside with explosive force. The iron wheel began to turn on its own, screeching with the friction of decades-old rust.

The heavy steel hatch slowly swung upward, creaking open into the pouring rain.

From the pitch-black depths of the flooded staircase beneath the sea, a hand reached out and gripped the edge of the wet concrete.

The hand was pale, dripping with black seawater, the fingers scarred from years of chemical burns. On the third finger was a worn platinum wedding band—the exact ring Daniel had placed on Claire's finger on their wedding day in Whispering Pines.

A figure dragged itself up into the gray light of the storm.

Chestnut hair, plastered to a face that was half-sculpted porcelain, half-ruined by fire and scar tissue. She wore a stained medical gown bearing the insignia of the Vance Fertility Clinic.

She looked up through the curtain of rain. Her hollow, sunken eyes locked onto Daniel.

May you like

Her cracked lips parted, and Claire Whitmore’s voice—ragged, ruined, but unmistakable—whispered through the howling wind:

"You took too long, Daniel... and now she has the other one."
