Chapter 5 - The Velvet Predator

Miller didn't flinch. He grabbed the phone from Daniel’s hand, plugged it directly into an extraction cradle linked to his laptop, and initiated a cell-tower ping.

"She’s getting desperate," Miller said, watching the signal triangulate across a high-resolution map of Westchester County. "Narcissists are most dangerous when their narrative begins to unravel. She thinks she holds all the cards because high-net-worth domestic violence cases almost always favor the initial complainant if there’s physical damage to the child."

"We have the video," Daniel insisted, his voice trembling with fury. "The video shows her drugging him and pressing the ladle down!"

"And her high-priced legal team will claim the video was AI-generated, deep-faked, or tampered with by an angry husband with access to high-end tech infrastructure," Miller countered grimly. "Look at the jurisdiction, Daniel. Whispering Pines is in Bedford. Her family belongs to the same country club as the presiding district judge. If she walks into the precinct with a signed affidavit claiming you were the one who held that ladle, and she presents that audio recording where she cries *'Daniel, stop hurting him,'* a grand jury could tie you up in indictments for two years while Noah is placed in state foster care."

"No," Daniel growled, slamming his fist onto the laminate table. The plastic cracked beneath the impact. "I will tear this world down to its foundations before anyone puts my son in a state home."

"Then we need to dissect her real motive," Miller said, leaning back. "Three million dollars in Cayman art shells isn't enough to justify two premeditated murders. Where is the money really going?"

Daniel forced himself to calm down, breathing deeply through his nose. His analytical mind, the sharp intellect that had built a multi-billion-dollar enterprise software firm, began overriding the blind panic.

"Evelyn’s maiden name isn't Montgomery," Daniel said slowly, a memory clicking into place from their trip to Zurich last autumn. "When we were opening the international escrow accounts at UBS, she had to present an original birth certificate. She showed an extract from the Cook County clerk’s office in Chicago. Her original name was Evelyn Vance-Cross."

Miller’s fingers froze over his keyboard. "Vance-Cross? She was related to Claire?"

"Claire never mentioned her," Daniel said. "Claire’s grandfather was Jonathan Vance, the founder of the pharmaceutical empire. Jonathan had two sons: Claire’s father, Arthur, and a younger, disgraced brother named Julian Vance-Cross, who was disinherited in 1984 after a corporate embezzlement scandal."

Miller’s fingers flew over the database, running deep background searches on corporate filings from Illinois in the mid-1980s.

"Here it is," Miller breathed, his eyes scanning the digitized microfilm documents. "Julian Vance-Cross died in a federal penitentiary in Marion, Illinois, in 1999. He left behind a wife and an eleven-year-old daughter: Evelyn. The family was left penniless, stripped of their stock options, and cast out of the Vance family social registry. While Claire was growing up in penthouses on Park Avenue and attending Swiss boarding schools, Evelyn was living in a subsidized walk-up in South Chicago, watching her mother clean hotel rooms."

"This wasn't just about money," Daniel said, the sheer horror of Evelyn’s lifelong obsession becoming sickeningly clear. "It was blood revenge. She spent thirty years watching Claire live the life she believed was stolen from her. She didn't just want to take Claire’s money. She wanted to sleep in Claire’s bed. Wear Claire’s jewelry. Dine off Claire’s wedding china. And then... destroy Claire’s child."

"A complete identity replacement," Miller said grimly. "She erased Claire, and now she’s liquidating the heir so the entire Vance legacy falls under her sole ownership. She’s not just a gold digger, Daniel. She’s an annihilator."

The laptop chimed. The cell-tower ping on Evelyn’s burner phone resolved down to a specific radius.

"She’s not at Whispering Pines," Miller announced, grabbing his leather jacket from the back of the chair. "The signal is bouncing off a tower two miles from here. She’s sitting in a black Mercedes SUV in the hospital’s north parking deck."

Daniel’s blood turned to liquid nitrogen. "She’s here? At the hospital?"

"She knows Noah is in Pediatric Intensive Care," Rosa cried out, rising to her feet and crossing herself frantically. "She knows if the doctors run a full pediatric trauma panel, they will find the sedatives in his blood! She’s coming to finish it!"
