Chapter 18 - The Edge of the Concrete Abyss

Daniel walked up the crumbling concrete stairs of the observation tower with deliberate, measured steps. The wind screamed through the gun slits in the concrete, carrying salt spray that stung his cut face. In his right hand, he carried the Glock with three rounds remaining. In his left hand, he held a red emergency flare he had pulled from the Maybach’s trunk.

He reached the roof deck.

The Atlantic—no, the Pacific—was a churning cauldron of gray and white twenty meters below, breaking against jagged sea stacks that tore the water into foam.

Evelyn was waiting.

Her chestnut hair was whipped across her face by the storm. Her cheekbones were razor sharp, her skin paper-pale. She held Noah against her chest with her left arm. The boy was half-conscious, his eyes rolling back under the influence of whatever sedative Vance had administered.

In her right hand, Evelyn held a surgical scalpel pressed directly against the soft skin of Noah’s throat.

"You look awful, Daniel," she said, her voice cutting clearly through the roar of the gale. "Wealthy men should age with more dignity."

"Let the boy go, Evelyn," Daniel said, stopping ten paces away. "Vance is thirty minutes behind me with a clean-up squad. You think you're getting out of this with the money? You're the loose end. He burned that woman in Bedford Hills so you could take the fall for another homicide."

Evelyn laughed—a high, brittle sound that sounded like breaking crystal. "Julian? That sniveling little bookkeeper? I poisoned our mother when I was twelve years old, Daniel. I know exactly what Julian is. Why do you think I brought you here instead of the airfield?"

She tilted her head, her smile stretching into something inhuman. "I didn't bring Noah here to inherit Montgomery Biotech. I brought him here because Claire's body isn't in that cemetery in Westchester."

Daniel stopped breathing. "What did you say?"

"You never opened the casket, did you?" Evelyn purred, taking a step backward, her designer heel balancing inches from the edge of the parapet. "You were so broken, so pathetic, crying into your linen handkerchief. You let Julian handle the embalming. You let Julian handle the sealed bronze vault."

She pointed with the scalpel toward the dark, rusted hatch in the center of the tower roof—the entrance to the submerged naval bunker that extended beneath the sea.

"Claire lived for six months after your wedding, Daniel. In the dark. Down there. She watched every single live-stream of our honeymoon in Amalfi. She watched you kiss me on the yacht. She watched me take her place in your bed."

Daniel’s world shattered into white noise. The ground seemed to liquify beneath his boots. "You're lying."

"Go look," Evelyn whispered, her eyes dancing with demonic glee. "The door is unlocked. Go see what’s left of your beloved Claire."
