Chapter 7 - The Ruin of Whispering Pines

"No!" Daniel lunged across the crib, disregarding his own safety.

At the same instant, Detective Miller fired.

The report of the service weapon in the small room was deafening. The bullet didn't strike Evelyn’s torso—Miller was too disciplined to risk a deflection into the baby's crib. Instead, the high-velocity slug shattered the plastic syringe in Evelyn’s hand, tearing through her fingers and sending shards of glass and potassium chloride spraying across the vinyl floor.

Evelyn screamed—a raw, demonic shriek of pure rage—as Daniel tackled her away from the crib, slamming her body against the linoleum and pinning her wrists to the ground.

"Don't move!" Daniel roared, his forearm pressed firmly against her throat, his bloodshot eyes staring into hers from inches away. "Don't you dare look at him!"

Evelyn struggled, hissing like a cornered viper, her manicured fingers clawing at Daniel’s forearms, leaving bloody gouges in his flesh. "You can't prove anything, Daniel!" she spat, blood flecking her porcelain teeth. "The world will see you for what you are! A broken drunk! An abusive monster who let his first wife die and burned his second wife's child!"

Miller was on her instantly, driving his knee into her shoulder blade and snapping stainless-steel cuffs around her wrists with two sharp, metallic clicks.

"Evelyn Montgomery, also known as Evelyn Vance-Cross," Miller intoned with cold, measured authority. "You are under arrest for attempted aggravated murder, assault on a police officer, child endangerment, and first-degree grand larceny."

Miller hauled her up by her elbows. Even with blood dripping from her mangled fingers and her silk scrubs torn, Evelyn threw her head back, laughing hysterically into the bright lights of the hallway as two arriving state troopers took custody of her.

"Enjoy your ghost, Daniel!" she yelled back through the glass doors. "Whispering Pines will always be Claire’s cemetery! And you’re just the groundskeeper waiting to die!"

The heavy doors swung shut. The hallway grew silent save for the rapid, terrified wails of baby Noah, who had finally awakened from his sedated stupor.

Daniel dropped to his knees beside the crib, his entire body trembling so violently he could barely raise his arms. He reached through the wooden safety slats, gently sliding his fingers beneath Noah’s uninjured arm, pulling the tiny, weeping child against his chest.

"I’ve got you," Daniel sobbed, burying his face in the soft crook of his son's neck, the scent of baby lotion and sterile burn dressing washing over him. "I’m sorry. Noah, I’m so sorry. Daddy is here. Daddy is never leaving you again."

Rosa entered the room quietly, leaning against the doorframe, tears streaming down her weathered cheeks. She didn't say a word. She simply walked over, placed her hand on Daniel’s shoulder, and knelt beside him in the quiet ruins of their shattered life.

Outside, the first sirens of the Westchester County tactical reinforcement units were wailing in the distance, cutting through the cold night air. The illusion had broken. The predator was chained. But the emotional carnage left in her wake was a wound that went deeper than scorched flesh.
