Chapter 22 - The Harvest at Vance Clinic

The vibration against Daniel’s hip felt like a live wire. He didn’t pull the phone out immediately. His mind refused to process the geometry of the nightmare. Noah—his son, the boy he had carried through an inferno, the child he believed was a product of Evelyn's synthetic surrogacy—was Claire’s biological child. And somewhere in the dark heart of the city, in the chrome-and-glass monument to his family's wealth, there was a girl.
"Get up," Daniel commanded his own trembling limbs. He reached down and scooped Claire into his arms. She weighed almost nothing; she felt like a bird wrapped in wet gauze. "We have to move. The harbor patrol is Evelyn’s. The sirens we heard ten minutes ago weren't an ambulance."
"She knows the hatch opened," Claire whispered, her head lolling against his shoulder. Her skin was burning with fever, radiating an unnatural, chemical heat. "The pressure sensor on the inner bulkhead tripped when I cracked the release valve. She has eyes on the water."
Daniel moved fast, shielding Noah between his body and the towering shadow of the salt silo. The rain was coming down in solid sheets now, turning the abandoned gravel yard into an ankle-deep slurry of gray mud. He led them toward the rusted Ford truck he had stashed behind the decommissioned generator shed.
"Tell me," Daniel grunted as he kicked the rusted passenger door open, setting Claire gently into the cracked vinyl seat. "Tell me everything. How did Evelyn do this without me knowing?"
Noah scrambled into the middle of the bench seat, squeezing his tiny frame between his father and the terrifying woman who looked like a ghost from his nightmares. Yet, when Claire looked down at him, Noah didn’t pull away. With the instinct of a child who had lived his entire life in silent survival mode, Noah reached out and touched the triangle of dots on Claire’s wrist.
Claire broke down into silent, heaving sobs.
"It started six months before the fire," Claire whispered, her teeth chattering so hard they clicked. "I found the second set of books at the clinic. Evelyn wasn’t just the chief administrator; she was running an offshore experimental wing. She had late-stage myelofibrosis—bone marrow failure. She was dying in secret, Daniel. She needed a donor. But not just any donor. She needed an embryonic stem cell match that only an identical genetic lineage could produce."
Daniel slammed his door shut, jammed the rusted key into the ignition, and coaxed the engine to life with a sputtering roar. He threw the truck into reverse, the tires spinning wildly in the mud before catching traction.
"She manipulated our IVF protocol," Daniel realized, the cold horror settling like lead in his stomach. "The extra hormone cycles. The sudden shift to the private facility in Whispering Pines."
"She didn't just manipulate it; she harvested it," Claire said, staring out the cracked windshield into the gloom. "She implanted two embryos. When the pregnancy took, she didn't want you to know about the girl. A male heir activated the Whitmore primary trust. A female twin was the insurance policy. If Noah died or rejected the marrow harvests, Emma was the backup."

Claire turned her hollow, burning eyes toward him.
"She staged the fire to eliminate me as an obstacle. She locked me in the clinic vault beneath the lake, burned a Jane Doe from the morgue in my bed, and waited for you to fall apart so she could walk in with your baby boy and play the savior."
