Chapter 24 - The 72-Hour Genetic Clock

The phone in Daniel’s pocket screamed with an incoming satellite call. The screen didn’t show a number—just a single word flashing in cold white pixels: *EVELYN.*

Daniel stared at the phone. His knuckles turned white against the steering wheel. He glanced at Claire, who gave him a stiff, terrifying nod. He hit the speaker button and held the device between them.

"Daniel, darling," Evelyn’s voice purred through the speaker. It was smooth, unbothered, as cool as liquid nitrogen. "You really should stop playing hero in the rain. It ruins your silhouette. And more importantly, it’s terribly bad for Noah’s respiratory tract."

"Where is she, Evelyn?" Daniel didn't raise his voice. The rage inside him had crystallized into something cold, sharp, and deadly. "Where is my daughter?"

A soft, mocking sigh echoed across the line.

"Ah. So the charred remains in the basement managed to speak before her vocal cords dissolved. How quaint. Claire always was an overachiever. I told the technician to double the saline solution, but I suppose love finds a way, doesn't it?"

"If you touch a hair on Emma's head—"

"Save the Liam Neeson monologue, Daniel. It doesn't suit a man who spent three years sleeping in my bed while his real wife was being harvested like a dairy cow forty feet below his boat dock," Evelyn snapped, her voice suddenly sharpening like an obsidian scalpel. "Let’s discuss logistics. You have Noah. Noah has the specific granulocyte count required for my 6:00 AM transfusion. The private surgical wing at Atlantic Tower is prepped. The doctors are waiting."

"Noah is never stepping foot near you again," Daniel growled.

"Then Emma dies at 6:01," Evelyn said evenly. "The pod’s automated dialyzer is locked to my biometric palm print and Noah’s blood profile. If I don't initiate the exchange cycle before sunrise, the oxygen saturation in the nursery capsule drops by two percent every thirty seconds. Do the math, Daniel. In six minutes, your little girl’s brain will be nothing more than cold porridge."

"You sick, twisted bitch—"

"Fifty-four minutes, Daniel," Evelyn interrupted, her tone returning to that terrifying, velvet warmth. "Bring Noah to the 40th floor. Just you and the boy. If I see Claire, if I see the police, if I even smell a federal badge within three blocks of the plaza, I will vent the pod into the exhaust system and walk out the service elevator with your family's entire trust fund. Tick-tock, darling."

The call clicked off. Silence descended upon the truck cab, heavy and suffocating.

Daniel looked at the digital clock on the dashboard.

*5:06 AM.*
