Chapter 26 - The Black Ledger in the Flooded Crypt

Before they could hit the highway interchange toward the city, Claire pointed a trembling, scarred finger toward an industrial park off the service road.
"Stop there," she ordered. "The old St. Jude administrative annex. Behind the incinerator."
"Claire, we have forty-two minutes!" Daniel barked.
"If you go into that penthouse without the override codes, Emma dies the moment Evelyn touches the main panel," Claire fired back, her eyes wild. "Evelyn’s security system was designed by Marcus Vance. He didn't trust his sister. When he realized what she was doing to me, he created an air-gapped failsafe. He hid the encrypted master key in the clinic's digital backup drive."
Daniel swung the truck into the derelict industrial lot, sending plumes of oily water spraying against the chain-link fence. The St. Jude annex was a brutalist block of stained concrete, boarded up and marked with orange spray paint from the local demolition squad.
Daniel killed the lights. Leaving Noah locked inside the truck with the doors bolted from the inside, he supported Claire as they stumbled through the broken glass of the rear loading dock.
The air inside the abandoned facility was thick with mold, dead rats, and old hospital chemicals. Claire led him down a flight of concrete stairs into a flooded basement storage locker. The water reached Daniel’s shins, freezing and vile.
Claire moved with feverish certainty toward an old fire-hose cabinet mounted on the damp wall. She wrenched open the rusted glass door. Behind the rotten canvas hose, recessed into the concrete, was a heavy steel junction box.
"Use your pocket knife," Claire whispered, her teeth clicking violently. "The ground wire. Cut it."
Daniel wedged the blade into the seam, popping the latch with a metallic crack. Inside sat a ruggedized, military-grade hard drive wrapped in waterproof plastic, sealed with a biometric thumb-latch.
"Marcus died for this," Claire said, tears streaming down her face as she pressed her scarred thumb against the scanner. A tiny green diode blinked to life. "This drive contains the real birth certificates, the unedited CCTV footage from the night of the fire, and the kill-switch code for the Atlantic Tower nursery pod."
Daniel grabbed the drive, its weight cool and heavy in his hand.
"Does it have the code to unlock the pod from the local network?" he asked.
"Yes," Claire said, looking up at him with an intensity that burned through the gloom. "The code is Emma’s original projected delivery date. *1-0-2-4.* But Daniel... to input it, someone has to be inside the pod’s auxiliary chamber. Manually. While the system is live."

"Then that's where I'm going," Daniel said.
"No," Claire whispered, her face twisting in pure maternal anguish. "You don't understand. If Evelyn senses an unauthorized breach, the pod’s secondary defense engages. It floods the inner air chamber with halon gas. You won't have more than ninety seconds to extract her."
