Chapter 11 - The Night Everything ChangedThat night, Tiffany sat in the back of a taxi.

Her wedding dress was folded beside her.
She had nowhere to celebrate.
Nowhere to go.
The apartment her father had provided was tied to his company.
Her credit cards stopped working before midnight.
Her phone exploded with messages.
Some were from reporters.
Others were from people she hadn't heard from in years.
Everyone wanted to know what had happened.
Nobody wanted to know how she felt.
She turned off her phone.
For the first time in years, there was silence.
She looked out the window.
The city passed in blurred streaks of gold and black.
She remembered Margaret's question.
"And if I had been?"
Tiffany closed her eyes.
For the first time, she understood what the question meant.
She hadn't slapped Margaret because Margaret had harmed her.
She had slapped her because Tiffany believed Margaret was beneath her.
That realization hurt more than losing Marcus.

Because it meant the problem had never been the wedding.
The problem had been Tiffany.
