Chapter 17 - Margaret Reads the LetterMargaret read the letter that evening.

It wasn't long.

Tiffany didn't ask for Marcus back.

She didn't ask Margaret to forgive her.

She didn't mention the wedding.

She simply admitted what she had done.

She wrote that she had mistaken wealth for worth.

That she had treated people differently depending on what they could give her.

That she had hated being invisible more than she had feared becoming cruel.

At the end, she wrote:

"I don't expect you to forgive me. I only wanted you to know that I finally understand why you were disappointed in me."

Margaret folded the letter.

Marcus watched her.

"Are you going to answer?"

Margaret looked at him.

"Perhaps."

"Do you forgive her?"

Margaret thought for a long moment.

"Forgiveness doesn't mean trust."

Marcus nodded.

"What does it mean?"

Margaret looked toward the rain-covered window.

"It means I refuse to carry her anger for the rest of my life."
