Tiffany grabbed the folder.
"My father paid the deposit."
David shook his head.
"Your father's payment was rejected."
"What?"
"The account was already frozen."
Her father, Robert Vance, suddenly appeared behind her.
"David."
The manager looked at him.
"Mr. Vance."
"Can we discuss this privately?"
"No."
Robert's face tightened.
"Please."
David opened another document.
"Your company filed for bankruptcy yesterday."
The ballroom erupted.
Tiffany turned slowly toward her father.
"Dad?"
Robert said nothing.
"Is that true?"
"Tiffany, this isn't the place."
"Is it true?"
Her mother began crying.
Tiffany looked from one parent to another.
Her dream wedding suddenly felt like a stage collapsing beneath her feet.
Then David delivered the final blow.
"The Sterling family covered the entire two-hundred-and-eighty-thousand-dollar wedding expense."
Tiffany's lips parted.
Two hundred and eighty thousand dollars.
She had told everyone the wedding represented her family's success.
But it hadn't.
May you like
It represented someone else's generosity.
And she had just slapped the woman who paid for it.
