Chapter 3 - The CallMargaret entered the private vanity room and closed the door behind her.

The noise of the wedding disappeared.

She stood before the mirror.

For several seconds, she simply stared at her reflection.

Then she touched her cheek.

The skin was already swelling.

Her eyes hardened.

"Ungrateful child."

She opened her handbag.

Her phone was already in her hand before she had fully decided what to do.

She dialed one number.

David Sterling, general manager of the estate, answered almost immediately.

"Mrs. Sterling."

"David."

"Is everything all right?"

"No."

A pause.

"Tell me what happened."

"The bride struck me."

Silence.

Margaret continued.

"Cancel everything."

David inhaled sharply.

"Everything?"

"The ceremony. The catering. The bar. The entertainment. All of it."

"Mrs. Sterling, the guests are already seated."

"I don't care."

Her voice was calm.

That calmness made David understand this was not a threat.

It was an order.

"And David?"

"Yes?"

"Have the police meet the Vances at the gate."

David hesitated.

"Understood."

Margaret ended the call.

She looked at herself once more.

The woman in the mirror looked older than she had that morning.

But stronger.

She had spent forty years building a life where no one could humiliate the people working beneath her.

May you like

Today, she had been humiliated in her own house.

She would not allow it to become a family tradition.
