He publicly praised Avery.
That worried her immediately.
Men with nothing to hide rarely worked so hard to stand beside heroes.
Cross announced a new task force to eliminate Black Meridian.
Then he appointed himself its senior authority.
Thomas warned Avery privately.
Cross had once been his closest friend.
That made him more dangerous, not less.
During a reception, Cross approached Briggs.
Nobody heard their conversation.
But Avery saw Briggs’ expression change.
Later, Briggs admitted Cross had offered him protection.
His charges could disappear.
His career could survive.
There was only one condition.
Briggs needed to testify that Avery had fabricated portions of the Black Meridian evidence.
Avery expected Briggs to be furious.
Instead, he smiled.
“Good.”
“Good?”
“He thinks I can still be bought.”
