Chapter 19 - THE FIELD WITHOUT LAUGHTERMonths later, Avery returned to Fort Liberty for another joint training program.

This time, nobody laughed when she entered.

That almost bothered her more.

She didn't want fear.

She didn't want worship.

She wanted professionalism.

A young female soldier approached after training.

“Petty Officer Mitchell?”

“Yes?”

The soldier hesitated.

“I almost quit last year.”

Avery waited.

“Then I saw the video.”

Avery expected her to mention the choke.

Instead, the soldier said:

“I saw you get back up.”

Those words stayed with Avery.

That evening, Vance offered Avery a role helping reform joint training standards.

Hayes pretended not to care whether she accepted.

Thomas encouraged her.

Avery said yes.

Not because she wanted to become a symbol.

Because symbols could be ignored.

Systems were harder to ignore once someone started changing them.
