Chapter 12 - The Empty RoomsThe first night alone was strangely difficult.

There were no voices.

No television.

No arguments.

No footsteps.

No Evelyn complaining about the temperature.

No Trevor asking where his things were.

The villa was enormous.

Too enormous.

I walked through every room.

The guest bedrooms.

The dining room.

The kitchen.

My old bedroom.

I stood at the doorway for several minutes.

The bed was still there.

The sheets were ruined.

My photographs had been moved.

One frame was cracked.

I picked it up.

It was a picture of Trevor and me from our first year of marriage.

We were standing beside a lake.

We looked happy.

I placed the photograph in a drawer.

I didn't throw it away.

Some memories deserve to exist.

They simply don't deserve to control your future.

That night, I slept in my own bedroom.

For the first time, I locked the door from the inside.

And I slept peacefully.
