Chapter 8 - The Documents“This property,” Sarah said calmly, “is registered solely through a private company owned by Allison.”
Trevor's expression changed.
Sarah continued.
“The estate was acquired before the marriage and paid for entirely by Allison.”
Evelyn shook her head.
“But she's married to my son!”
“That doesn't transfer ownership,” Sarah replied.
Trevor looked at me.
“You wouldn't really do this to me.”
I almost laughed.
Do this to him?
He had done this to himself.
Sarah produced another document.
“And there's something else.”
She handed the commander the divorce petition.
“Filed this morning.”
Trevor stopped breathing for a moment.
Evelyn stared at the papers.
“You're divorcing my son?”
“Yes,” I answered.
My voice was quiet.
“But after last night, I don't think that decision should surprise anyone.”
Trevor stepped toward me.
“Allison, wait.”
I raised one hand.
He stopped.
“I don't want another explanation.”
“But my mother—”
“You made the choice.”
His face crumbled.
For the first time, he couldn't hide behind Evelyn.
He couldn't blame the family.
He couldn't blame circumstances.
