Chapter 11 - The Attorney Opens Father’s Archive
Margaret opened a sealed archive Matthew had left with her.
Inside was a video.
Matthew sat in the lake-house study.
He looked older than Ryan remembered.
“If Ryan is watching this, I probably waited too long to explain
things.”
He talked about Elena.
Caroline.
The trust.
He said Caroline knew the house would ultimately belong to the boys and
had accepted it when they married.
Then he said something that ended Diane’s favorite defense.
“Caroline never asked me to give this house to Diane.”
Diane closed her eyes.
Matthew continued.
“She asked me to let Diane visit because family mattered to her.”
Ryan paused the video.
That sentence destroyed the story Diane had told herself for years.
Caroline wanted Diane included.
