Chapter 8 - Ashley Reveals What She Heard
Ashley had spent the day defending her mother.
Then she heard Greg and Diane arguing behind the kitchen.
She recorded part of it.
Not because she wanted justice.
Because she was scared.
In the audio, Greg said:
“If Ryan gets the trust documents, the refinancing collapses.”
Diane answered:
“You told me the lender would never look that far back.”
Greg said:
“They will now.”
Then Diane whispered:
“I should have burned the letter.”
Ashley brought the recording to Ryan.
Her hands trembled.
“I didn’t know.”
Ryan looked at her.
“You laughed when Noah fell in the lake.”
Ashley began crying.
“I know.”
“That matters.”
“I know.”
She expected him to yell.
He did not.
He simply took the recording and handed it to Margaret.
Ashley’s apology did not erase what she had done.
