Chapter 10 - Diane Finally Tells the Truth
Diane requested one meeting with Ryan.
No Greg.
No Ashley.
No lawyers in the room, though Margaret waited nearby.
Diane sat at the long dining table.
“I hated your mother.”
Ryan was stunned.
Diane continued.
“Elena had everything Caroline wanted.”
“What does that have to do with us?”
“Caroline spent years feeling like a guest in this house.”
“She was allowed to live here for life.”
“She wanted it to be hers.”
Ryan shook his head.
“And after she died, you decided to finish that for her?”
Diane looked down.
“I thought Matthew had always favored Elena’s children.”
Ryan stared.
“Your sister was my stepmother.”
“I know.”
“She was kind to us.”
“I know.”
That made it worse.
Diane had turned Caroline’s private sadness into permission for
something Caroline herself might never have done.
“You didn’t protect your sister,” Ryan said.
“You used her.”
