Chapter 13 - Noah Returns to the Lake

Noah refused to go near the water for months.
Then one Saturday, he asked Ryan to take him back.
They walked to the dock together.
No party.
No Diane.
No shouting.
No jewelry box.
Ryan sat beside him.
“You don’t have to swim.”
“I know.”
Noah dipped one shoe into the water.
Then the other.
Ryan laughed.
“You’re wearing sneakers.”
“I know.”
Noah sat on the edge.
“I hate this lake.”
Ryan nodded.
“Fair.”
After a while, Noah said:
“Mom liked it.”
“Yeah.”
“And Dad.”
“Yeah.”
Noah looked at the water.
“Maybe I only hate one day.”
Ryan smiled.
“That sounds possible.”
Noah did not swim.
He did not need to.

He simply stayed until sunset.
That was enough.
