Chapter 6 - Noah Learns About His Mother

Noah asked why their father created the trust.
Ryan did not know the whole answer.
Margaret did.
Elena, their mother, had loved the lake house.
She had inherited part of the land from her own parents before Matthew
built the mansion there.
When Elena became ill, she asked Matthew to make sure both sons would
always have somewhere that could not be taken by business debt or a
second marriage.
Ryan was eighteen then.
Noah was still a baby.
Elena died six months later.
Ryan remembered the funeral.
He remembered holding Noah because their father could not stop crying.
He did not remember any conversation about a trust.
Margaret explained that Matthew had tried to protect the boys from
financial fights while they were grieving.
Ryan looked toward the lake.
Their mother had not left them a luxury house.
She had left them a protected place.
Diane had spent years acting as if that protection belonged to her.
Noah whispered:
“Mom wanted me to have this too?”
“Yes,” Margaret said.

Noah looked toward the water where Diane had shoved him the day before.
That answer changed the house for him.
