Chapter 1 - The Birthday AccusationThe birthday candles were still burning when my mother-in-law stood up and destroyed everything.

It was supposed to be Lily's sixth birthday—a small celebration in our suburban backyard, beneath strings of warm lights and a sky turning violet over the rooftops.
My daughter was laughing as she chased bubbles across the lawn.
Grant was beside the cake, smiling for photographs.
I remember thinking, for one brief moment, that we looked like a perfect family.
Then Evelyn put down her wineglass.
"She isn't my son's daughter."
The laughter stopped.
I stared at her.
"What did you just say?"
Evelyn's eyes never left Lily.
"I said Lily isn't Grant's biological child."
Grant went pale.
My heart began pounding.
"Mom," he whispered.
But Evelyn wasn't finished.
"Ask your husband how a sterile man managed to father a child."
Silence swallowed the backyard.
Even the children seemed to sense that something terrible had happened.
I turned toward Grant.
He wouldn't look at me.
May you like
And that was when I knew.
There was a secret.
