Chapter 5 - Evelyn's Real MotiveThe next morning, Evelyn came to our house.
She didn't apologize.
Instead, she looked at me as if I were the criminal.
"I told you the truth."
"No," I said. "You accused me of cheating."
"You knew Grant couldn't father her."
"I didn't know!"
Evelyn's expression changed.
For the first time, I saw fear behind her anger.
"What aren't you telling me?"
She looked toward Grant.
"Tell her."
Grant shook his head.
"Mom, stop."
Evelyn slammed her purse onto the table.
"You think I don't know what happened?"
She pulled out an old medical document.
Grant's face drained of color.
"What is that?"
"Your father's fertility records."
I read the first page.
Then the second.
Then I froze.
Grant's father had undergone treatment at the same fertility clinic years earlier.
And the dates overlapped.
Evelyn whispered:
"That clinic has been hiding something."
