Before we married, doctors had confirmed that he had severe infertility.
His sperm count was effectively zero.
He had spent years pretending he could someday become a father naturally.
Then he met me.
He said he fell in love and became terrified that if he told me the truth, I would leave.
So he secretly began investigating fertility treatment.
"Why didn't you tell me?"
"Because I was afraid."
"You built our marriage on a lie."
"I know."
He explained that when we decided to have a baby, he had gone through fertility treatment.
But there was one detail he had hidden.
The clinic had used donor material.
"Whose?"
"I don't know."
I stared at him.
"You don't know?"
"The clinic said the donor was anonymous."
My mind raced.
Then I remembered something.
The strange envelope I had once found in Grant's desk.
The clinic logo.
A donor identification number.
Grant had told me it was an old medical bill.
