There had been two embryos associated with our treatment.
One was transferred.
The other remained frozen.
But the records showed that someone had accessed the storage unit six years later.
After Lily was born.
"Who?"
"We're still checking."
Then Dr. Mercer found another document.
The second embryo had been transferred to another patient.
Without proper authorization.
My knees nearly gave out.
"What does that mean?"
"It means there may be another child."
Grant stared at the floor.
Ethan looked stunned.
Dr. Mercer continued.
"Someone may have created two families from the same genetic material."
Suddenly Lily's story was no longer an isolated secret.
There could be another child somewhere in America carrying the same biological history.
And then my phone rang.
An unknown number.
