Chapter 6 - The ClinicI drove to the fertility clinic alone.

Rain hammered the windshield as I sat in the parking lot, staring at the glass doors.
I wasn't sure whether I wanted answers or revenge.
A receptionist checked my identification and disappeared into a back office.
Ten minutes later, a woman in a navy suit appeared.
"Mrs. Carter?"
"Yes."
"My name is Dr. Helen Mercer. I oversee reproductive records."
"I need information about my daughter's conception."
She hesitated.
That hesitation terrified me.
"I need to know whether the donor record associated with my daughter's treatment is accurate."
Dr. Mercer looked at the file.
Then she looked at me.
"Mrs. Carter... there may be a problem."
"What kind?"
She lowered her voice.
"Your daughter's donor identification number does not match the original treatment record."
My blood went cold.
"What does that mean?"
"We don't know yet."
"Then find out."
Dr. Mercer nodded.

But before I left, she said something that made my entire body freeze.
"Please don't tell your husband yet."
