Chapter 1 - THE SHATTERED REFLECTIONThe Sterling estate stood above the city like a kingdom that had forgotten how to feel.

Behind its iron gates, manicured gardens stretched beneath a pale winter sky. Inside, everything gleamed—Italian marble, antique paintings, gold-trimmed walls, crystal chandeliers that scattered cold light across the enormous foyer.
But beneath all that beauty, something was about to break.
Victoria Vale stood beneath the three-tiered chandelier in an emerald-green velvet gown, looking less like a woman preparing for marriage and more like a queen preparing for coronation.
On her finger glittered a diamond ring worth more than most people earned in a lifetime.
In her arms was six-month-old Leo Sterling.
The baby was the son of Julian Sterling, billionaire founder of Sterling Holdings and one of the most powerful men in the city.
To everyone else, Leo was precious.
To Victoria, he was an obstacle.
She looked down at him with a faint smile.
"You're the only thing standing between me and everything I deserve."
Across the foyer, Clara Bennett quietly polished a table that was already spotless.
She was twenty-seven, modestly dressed, and nearly invisible to the wealthy people who lived inside the mansion.
But Leo knew her.
Whenever he cried, he reached for Clara.
Whenever he was frightened, he searched for her face.
Victoria had noticed.
And she hated it.
She slowly turned toward Clara.
"Come here."
Clara approached carefully.
"Yes, ma'am?"
Victoria's eyes narrowed.
"Take him."
Clara extended her arms.
Then Victoria stopped.
"No."
A strange silence filled the foyer.
Clara lowered her hands.
Victoria looked at the baby again.
There was no hesitation in her expression.
No accident.
No fear.
Only calculation.
She loosened her arms.
And let go.
For one impossible second, Leo seemed suspended in the air.
Clara's heart stopped.
"NO!"
She threw herself forward.
Her knees slammed into the marble.
Her shoulder struck the floor.
But she twisted her body beneath the falling baby.
Leo hit her instead of the marble.
The impact knocked the breath from Clara's lungs.
Then came the scream.
Leo's terrified cry echoed through the mansion.
Clara gathered him into her arms, trembling violently.
"It's okay. It's okay, sweetheart. I've got you."
Tears streamed down her face.

Across the room, Victoria simply watched.
And smiled.
