Chapter 2 - THE VIPER'S WHISPERLeo's cries echoed through the mansion.

Servants froze.

Two security guards stood near the entrance, their faces drained of color.

Clara looked up at Victoria.

"You dropped him."

Victoria raised one perfect eyebrow.

"I did no such thing."

"You let go."

Victoria stepped closer.

"You should be more careful, Clara."

Clara stared at her in disbelief.

"You tried to kill him."

The room went silent.

Victoria's smile disappeared.

Then she leaned close enough for Clara to smell her expensive perfume.

"Think very carefully before you accuse me of anything."

Clara's arms tightened around Leo.

Victoria whispered:

"Who do you think Julian will believe?"

She smiled.

"His future wife?"

A pause.

"Or a nanny?"

Clara felt the truth of those words like a knife.

Victoria knew the world Clara lived in.

Money protected people.

Power protected people.

People like Clara had nothing.

Victoria turned away.

Then the massive oak doors opened.

A cold wind swept through the foyer.

Everyone turned.

Julian Sterling stood in the doorway.

Dark coat.

Rainwater on his shoulders.

A face carved from controlled fury.

He had arrived home earlier than expected.

And he had seen everything.

Victoria's face went white.

"Julian..."

He didn't answer.

His eyes moved from Victoria...

to Clara...

to his terrified son.

His voice was quiet.

"What happened?"

May you like

Victoria opened her mouth.

But Julian had already seen the truth.
